# Parasites
A parasite is an organism that lives in or on another organism (its host) and benefits from the host's resources. Parasites can cause disease in their host species, which can range from mild to severe. Examples of parasites in nature include protozoa, nematodes, trematodes, and cestodes, which are all microscopic. Larger parasites include fleas, ticks, lice, and some species of worms. Parasites can reproduce quickly and feed on their hosts' nutrients, weakening their hosts and even leading to death.
>The chessboard is the world; the pieces are the phenomena of the universe; the rules of the game are what we call the laws of Nature. The player on the other side is hidden from us. We know that his play is always fair, just, and patient. But also we know, to our cost, that he never overlooks a mistake or makes the small est allowance for ignorance. ~ [[Thomas Henry Huxley]]
