# Open source is not compatible with monopoly
I'm always skeptical of people trying to build open source software that competes with proprietary software. Building software for a large user base requires many people, and thus, money. Apple is proprietary, Notion is proprietary, Algolia is proprietary, etc.
On the other hand, look at Kubernetes, Swift, Elasticsearch, etc. So, my question is: when does open source software scale and when does it not?
My current belief is that you can't monopolize open source software unless you change human nature - good luck with that!
