# From invention to innovation
The Wright brothers invented the first successful airplane in 1903, but it wasn't until the decades that followed that their invention became an innovation. The Wright brothers' invention quickly caught the attention of innovators and engineers around the world, and from there, advancements in aviation technology began to rapidly occur. From the 1940s to the present day, the airplane has become a staple of modern society and has opened up a world of possibilities for transportation, business, and leisure. Today, airplanes are used for everything from air travel and cargo delivery to search and rescue and aerial photography. In the decades since the invention of the airplane, countless innovations have been made to make air travel safer, faster, and more efficient.
In other words, invention is the birth of the technology, while innovation is the process of taking the initial invention, iterating on it, and making it publicly accessible.
