# Second-Order Thinking
In chess people try to predict what might happen after each of their move-opportunity, they simulate the future in their mind, after all isn't it what [[Philosophy/Consciousness/Consciousness|consciousness]] exist for?
Second-Order Thinking is about trying to simulate the following chain-effect of your decision(s).
In his book "The Future of the Mind", physicist Michio Kaku discusses the idea of different levels of consciousness. He posits that a level 3 consciousness, what humans possess, includes the ability to construct a model of the world and run simulations of the future in order to make better decisions. Therefore, Second-Order Thinking could be seen as one manifestation of our level 3 consciousness at work.
