# Atomic nucleus
The atomic nucleus is the central component of an atom, containing the majority of its mass and a positive charge. The nucleus is composed of protons and neutrons, both of which are positively charged. Protons and neutrons are held together by the strong nuclear force, and the number of protons in the nucleus determines the element. The nucleus also contains electrons, which orbit around the nucleus, and their number is equal to the number of protons. The nucleus can exist in different configurations, called isotopes, which have different properties and underlying structures.
